Saft, a leading manufacturer of batteries for industries, has just won a major contract for the supply of specialized battery systems to Rolls Royce Marine.

The lithium-ion battery system (Saft Li-ion Super Phosphate – SLFP) will be integrated into the hybrid propulsion systems for the polar research vessel “RRS Sir David Attenborough”, commissioned by UK’s Natural Environment Research Council and currently under construction.

This is the second important deal Saft (along with Rolls Royce Marine) closes in the marine sector, after the agreement with the Norwegian Coastal Administration for another hybrid multi-application vessel.

This contract marks a new milestone for Saft, which enters as a leading player in a new industrial segment, three years after the entrance in the aerospace sector with the supply of primary lithium batteries for Philae, the robotic lander carried by the Rosetta spacecraft.
